Norfolk Island welcomes visitors to holiday in Norfolk Island!
Entry requirements;

  • A current Australian passport or Australian Document of Identity; or
  • A current New Zealand passport

Foreign Passports*

  • A multiple entry Australian visa valid for 30 days beyond their intended length of stay
  • A return airline ticket

    Recent changes to the Immigration Act 1980 allow Australian Citizens greater flexibility to stay on island longer and without making application. For more information on the changes see: Australians in Norfolk Island fact sheet

    If you are the holder of a foreign passport* and intend to live and work in Norfolk Island you are required to make an appointment with the Immigration Department to produce evidence of the following requirements;

    • Return Airline Ticket – valid for the duration of Temporary Entry Permit (TEP). Alternatively after arrival on Norfolk
      Island, a cash bond can be lodged with the Immigration office to cover the cost of air travel from Norfolk Island to Australia or New Zealand.
    • Current Passport - valid for duration of stay
    • Australian Multiple Entry Visa – valid for 30 days beyond the intended stay
    • Police clearance certificate/s for each country an applicant has resided in for 12 months or more over the past ten (10) years since turning 16 years of age.Police Clearance Certificates not in English require translation by Australian accredited translators; refer to the National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters for the list of accredited translators. The translated document and the original document or certified copy is required to be provided with the application

    • Letter from employer with details of proposed employment and an advertisement from the local paper (the Norfolk Islander) for two (2) consecutive weeks

    Becoming a Resident of Norfolk Island
    Information to help you apply for Norfolk Island residency

     

    Australian Citizens

    Recent changes to the Immigration Act 1980 allow Australian citizens to apply immediately for Norfolk Island Residency. For more information on the changes see: Australians in Norfolk Island fact sheet

    If you intend to be ordinarily resident on Norfolk Island you can make an appointment with the Immigration Department to lodge your section 28A residency application.

    Bring along to your appointment;

    • Completed Norfolk Island Residency Application
    • Current Passport
    • Proof of being a member of the Norfolk Island Healthcare Scheme
    • Police Clearance Certificate/s

    Frequently Asked Questions

     

    What is the process for permits
    Visitor and Temporary Entry Permits (TEP) are dealt with administratively by an Authorised Officer who is authorised to act on behalf of the Minster for Immigration.
    General Entry Permits are prepared by an Authorised Officer and referred to the Minister.

    What can I do if my application is unsuccessful
    If you are aggrieved with a decision on your permit you have the right to appeal that decision.
    Visitor permit appeals are dealt with by the Administrator while GEP, residency and other Immigration decision appeals (other than prosecution decisions) are dealt with by the Australian Federal Minister. Strict time limits apply and appellants are strongly urged to obtain professional legal advice and assistance in regard to such appeals.

    Do I need a return ticket to travel to Norfolk Island
    If you are travelling on a Foreign Passport* you will need a ticket for onward travel from Norfolk Island

    Foreign Passports* - are all passports not issued by Australia or New Zealand

    Do you need an Australian visa to travel to Norfolk Island
    If you’re travelling on a foreign passport* (any passport other than Australia or New Zealand) you require a multiple entry Australian visa valid for 30 days beyond your intended length of stay. For more information contact an Australian Consulate or Embassy closest to you.

    What is a PRNIV
    A Permanent Resident of Norfolk Island Visa (PRNIV). For further information please see Fact Sheet 59 - Immigration Arrangements for Norfolk Island.

    How do I obtain a PRNIV
    Once you have been granted Norfolk Island residency you are entitled to a PRNIV.

    Do I need a medical to work in Norfolk Island
    For foreign nationals* intending to reside and work in Norfolk Island it is a requirement to undergo a medical at the Norfolk Island Hospital. This requirement was adopted in line with the Australian Federal health requirements.

    Foreign National* - all non Australia or New Zealand citizens

    What is a Police Clearance Certificate
    Norfolk Island Immigration laws and guidelines require an assessment of character before a permit or residency is granted.  The Act and guidelines require decision makers to have regard to a police clearance certificate and any convictions against the applicant.

    Who needs a Police Clearance Certificate
    For foreign nationals* intending to reside and work in Norfolk Island are required to provide police clearances for each country they have resided in for 12 months or more over the past ten years since turning 18 years of age. This requirement was adopted in line with the Australian Federal character requirements.

    Australian and New Zealand citizens applying for residency also require a police clearance certificate.

    What is a Visitors Permit
    A visitors permit is deemed to have been issued on arrival in Norfok Island for up to 120 days.

    Foreign nationals* wishing to holiday in Norfolk Island for longer than 120 days can make application for a further 120 day visitors permit. See permit requirements.

    Foreign National* - all non Australia or New Zealand citizens

    What is a UEP
    An Unrestricted Entry Permit – issued on arrival into Norfolk Island to most Australian and New Zealand citizens. A UEP allows the holder to live, work, conduct a business, invest, and reside in Norfolk Island without making formal application for immigration. UEPs are deemed cancelled upon departure from the island.

    What is a TEP
    A Temporary Entry Permit – issued for the purposes of employment to foreign nationals for a period of 12 months. See permit requirements.

    What is a GEP
    A General Entry Permit – issued to foreign nationals for a period of 5 years and 6 months. See permit requirements.

    Do I have to apply to become a member of the Norfolk Island Healthcare Scheme (NIHCS)
    Norfolk Island has it’s own medical benefit scheme – Norfolk Island Healthcare Scheme. Many Australian Private health insurers generally do not cover persons in Norfolk Island except under limited travel insurance packages for very limited period visits to Norfolk Island. If you intend to be in Norfolk Island for 120 days or more it is compulsory that you make application to be a member of the Healthcare Scheme.     Will my pension be affected if I reside on Norfolk Island
    Australian Social Security legislation does not extend to Norfolk Island and Norfolk Island has its own social services legislation. Prior to making a permanent or long term move to Norfolk Island it is advisable that you make enquiries regarding the country you receive your benefit from whether your intended move will affect your social services benefit.     As at 1 July 2013 the prescibed fee of 1 unit = $25.20

    Fee units less than 2 $AMT = fee units x indexed value of a fee unit rounded to nearest whole dollar (fifty cents rounded up)
    Fee units 2 or more $AMT = fee units x indexed value of a fee unit rounded to nearest whole multiple of $5 (odd multiples of $2.50 are rounded up)
